Our School Rules to Promote Positive Behaviour & Learning

Each class discusses their class rules at the beginning of the school year which everyone agrees will assist learning and facilitate a happy classroom environment. These are displayed in each classroom and work on a positive behaviour ethos. In addition, there are school rules and values which everyone works to:

We look after property

We are gentle

We tell the truth

We are kind and thoughtful

We listen to people and show respect

We are ready to learn

We also promote the use of kind words and gentle hands.

In Early Years Foundation Stage the children are introduced to our six Learning Power Pets who promote pro-social behaviour eg. Caring Caterpillar, Responsible Rabbit, Sensible Squirrel, Tough Tortoise, Wise Owl and Team Ant. Children are also reminded to use 'kind words and gentle hands' and are praised when they are noticed doing so.

In Key Stage One children are building their understanding of their learning skills, which include learning how to behave positively in a range of social and learning situations. This pro-social behaviour is promoted through our Building Learning Power Pets and we  work on the premise of being:

  • Caring, kind and gentle like Caring Caterpillar
  • Responsible for our behaviour, our learning and looking after property like Responsible Rabbit
  • Sensible during our learning time and sensible with each other during our play times like Sensible Squirrel
  • Resilient and willing to try even when learning is tricky like Tough Tortoise
  • Reflective and willing to take time to think things through, to think about our actions and the words we use so that everyone can learn and be happy at school like Wise Owl
  • A team player and working together to help each other when learning and during our play like Team Ant.

We also use the phrases: 'kind words' and 'gentle hands' as positive reminders and during discussions when poor behaviour occurs.

In Key Stage Two children are praised for working hard, persevering, helping others and for working within our school rules and values; every time an individual is noticed they are praised. Building Learning Power vocabulary such as Responsibility, Resourcefulness, Resilience and Reciprocity are understood and used by both adults and children to share positive learning and social successes.

Children are held very much accountable for their behaviour towards others and their learning. They are actively encouraged to redeem themselves and every day is regarded as a new start.

Children's achievements and successes are celebrated in a special Celebration Assembly held every Friday, which is a special time for all children and staff to celebrate the positive and successful outcomes noted that week. Every week the staff working in each class nominate someone to receive a praise postcard and children take these home to share with their families.  Some children may also receive a 'special' praise postcard from Mrs Sheppard or Miss Rogers.

Rewards in class also include stickers, praise, the opportunity to share their work with other staff and pupils and, in KS2, whole class reward cards. Considerate behaviour is also noted at break and lunch times by staff on duty and these may also be reasons to give an certificate during Celebration Assembly.

We Say No To Bullying, whether verbal, physical or cyber; it has no place in our school. We ask for all parents and pupils to help us by reporting immediately any incidents so that we can deal firmly and fairly with any problems, involving parents if appropriate.
